10 travel accessories you need for an overnight flight to arrive well rested & ready for adventure.
This last year I caught the travel bug. I’ve always had the desire to travel, but after our spring break trip to Maui, Hawaii with Roger’s parents’ last spring I have been dreaming of wandering through more of God’s beautiful creation.
After Roger graduated from dental school & started working all of our attention (& money) went to renovating our house. But one of our goals for 2017 is to travel more, to spend more money on memories rather than on physical items. Although it’s only February we have already begun to turn these plans into a reality. So far we have been to Maui (& we stayed at some of the best resorts for free!! Details to come… Sign up here so you don’t miss out on these traveling tips) & next up is Europe in a few weeks (which was our Christmas present to each other bought on Groupon). We also have more plans for later in the year, but until they have been booked & paid for we will continue to count them as hopes & dreams.
Something that I learned on my first trip to Maui, particularly on the red eye home, was the importance of packing travel accessories that will make for a more enjoyable & relaxing flight, especially if you are flying overnight.
Luckily, on our way back from Maui this last time, we didn’t have to catch a red-eye as we were able to spend some time with my husband’s brother & sweet wife in California before traveling the rest of the way home. However, I have made a list of all of my must have overnight plane travel gear for when we fly to Paris in the middle of the day (here) & night (there). We arrive at 6 am in France & I want to be well rested for a day of Paris sightseeing & adventure.
And since I’m sure I’m not the only one who has big travel plans this year, I thought I should share my list with you too!
1. Bluetooth Headphones or Earplugs
My husband has an amazing pair of noise canceling Bluetooth headphones that he takes on trips. These things can be a lifesaver for those who have a hard time falling asleep when there is too much noise, which is often the case on planes. They come in a wide array of prices, but you can easily find them online on eBay & Amazon too. I’m thinking I might put a pair on my birthday wish list this year.
2. Travel Pillow
A good travel pillow is another must have item when you want to catch some shut-eye on a plane. There are a lot of unique travel pillow options available these days online. One of my Christmas stocking stuffers for Roger (although it was too big for the stocking) was one of these new & unique types of travel pillows that were on Kickstarter. I’ll let you know how it goes on Instagram Stories!!
3. Sleep Mask
I love sleep masks. I use mine often as we have yet to put up blinds or drapes in our bedroom. Although I’m thinking I might need an upgrade to one of these adorable sleeping masks on Etsy! I can’t decide between the Audrey Hepburn Breakfast at Tiffany’s inspiration, the lace & satin, &/or the linen cat, There are just too many beautiful handmade options!
4. Relaxing Moisturizer or Spray
Flying, especially overnight to a new & exciting country, can be exciting & stressful all at the same time, which makes sleeping difficult. Some relaxing scents that promote sleep include lavender, chamomile, bergamot, jasmine, & rose. You could try a jasmine body creme, a lavender oil roll, &/or rose travel spray for a more restful flight.
5. Compression Socks
Although some say that compression socks aren’t needed if you are young, there are some young people who say they never travel on long flights without them. And since I’m always cold on flights I figure you can’t go wrong with good compression socks.
6. A Good Book
Now sometimes books can pull you in & you will stay up all night reading them, but sometimes even interesting books can put you to sleep if written in just the right way. I recommend trying out a few books leading up to your big flight. If it puts you to sleep be sure to bring it for your overnight flight if it is super intriguing save it for the beach! And right now Target is having a buy two, get one free sale on select books!
One of the most frustrating things can be forgetting or packing away your chargers in your luggage. Be sure to bring all of your extra chargers & if you are traveling with someone you might also want to bring a headphone splitter!
8. Blanket, Shaw, or Scarf
Because I get cold easily I try to dress in light layers so that I can put on or take off layers as needed. Even still, having a clean & cozy travel blanket on hand can make your trip that much more relaxing & enjoyable. You could even bring a special travel scarf or shawl to wrap up in for extra comfort!
9. Hanging Hand Sanitizer
This might sound like a funny one, but once you get through security (& can take your approved liquids out of their plastic bag) it will be nice to have hand sanitizer readily available whenever you need it. No one likes to reach their germy hands into their bag to search for their little bottle of hand sanitizer. It’s so much easier to have the hand sanitizer you can simply hang from your bag & grab as you need. And if you remember, I also shared this tip in my post about 20 Things to Buy Before Your Disney Vacation.
10. Travel Gear Organizer
And now that you have all of your necessary travel gear planned you are going to want to keep it all neat & organized with a travel gear organizer. Because let’s face it, a mess can be a stress. HA!
Extra Travel Gadgets & Plane Accessories:
First Aid Kit (just make sure the components are TSA approved)
TravelJane! (I had to include this because I thought it was hilarious & something I might actually need someday. Last time we flew I sat next to an elderly woman who fell asleep & I had drunk way too much water before & during the flight, by the end I was doing a little dance!)
Money Belt (apparently it’s good to wear these even while flying)
Do you have any must bring travel items?
I’d love to hear from you!

With love, G
Love suffers long and is kind;
love does not envy;
love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;
does not behave rudely, does not seek its own,
is not provoked, thinks no evil;
does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;
bears all things, believes all things,
hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails.
But whether there are prophecies, they will fail;
whether there are tongues, they will cease;
whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.
For we know in part and we prophesy in part.
But when that which is perfect has come,
then that which is in part will be done away.
