What I learned from the Tetra Pak challenge & happiness quiz, along with 10 Ways to Live a More Sustainable Life.
Over the last month I have been taking the Tetra Pak Challenge for Living a More Sustainable Life & over the last year I have become increasingly interested in living a more sustainable lifestyle because I want the world to be a clean & livable place for my family & our future children. While it was not always easy I am glad that I took the challenge in order to learn my weaknesses & strengths & learn how I can live a more sustainable life!
Here are the challenges I took on:
- When grocery shopping, choose food and beverage products with renewable packaging, like cartons.
- Take shorter showers.
- Bike or walk whenever possible.
- Swap your paper coffee cup for a mug.
The first challenge was not too difficult because the majority of our groceries involve fresh fruit & vegetables. Also my husband loves buying cartons of ice cream! So this was a fun little challenge that we both enjoyed! I recommend this challenge as a fun way to see which of your favorite brands are encouraging & promoting sustainable living.
Taking shorter showers was extremely difficult for me because I love showers! I often get lost in my own thoughts & day dreams while showering. So to help remind myself to take shorter showers I turned on music & would challenge myself to finish my shower in a certain number of songs depending on if I had to wash my hair or shave. This ended up being a fun new way to take quicker showers & encourage my indulgence in singing loudly in the shower! I recommend trying this challenge & discovering how much more fun showering is while singing on the top of your lungs to your favorite songs!
The third challenge was simple since I work from home, but I have been enjoying walking more now that spring has arrived! How can you not be happy when enjoying the beautiful spring weather we have been blessed with this year? My spirits are instantly lifted when I see blooming flowers & trees with fresh green leaves! I recommend trying this challenge so as your life becomes more sustainable your health will become better too!
The final challenge was a simple addition to my life because I recently purchased a couple packs of reusable travel coffee cups that look like the paper cup version. I love drinking out of these reusable coffee cups because they are easy to clean & produce less trash, which is great for the environment! I recommend trying this challenge & finding a few cute mugs to help you towards sustainable living.
At the end of the challenge I took the Tetra Pak’s Happiness Quiz & my results were Bountiful Bliss! Ironically perfect, right?
I highly recommend taking the Tetra Pak challenge & seeing how you can add sustainable living to your life! It feels good to know that I can adapt & add little things to my life that can have positive renewable & environmental impacts. By changing just one simple habit, you can make a big impact on your life & the world around you! Whether you change how you get to school or work or simply make different choices at the grocery store, changing one habit at a time can make a real difference.
And since I had so much fun with this little challenge I decided to create a little list of ways to live a more sustainable life that involves both the list from the Tetra Pak challenge & a few more to make a complete list of 10 Ways to Live a More Sustainable Life!
1. Bike or walk.
Of course I know this isn’t possible for everyone, but it is a great way to help the environment, save money, & stay healthy! If you can’t bike or walk to school or work you can always try carpooling!
2. Eat what you buy.
Don’t let delicious food go to waste. Buy only what you need & make sure to eat it all, even if that means eating leftovers in creative new ways.
3. Use less water.
This can range from taking shorter showers, to running your dishwasher/wash machine only when it’s completely filled, to turning off the water while you brush your teeth.
4. Trade paper (coffee) cups for mugs.
While it’s easy to recycle, an even better option to lessen our carbon footprint is to replace paper cups with reusable glass cups & mugs!
5. Purchase products with renewable packaging.
Instead of plastic or cans, look for products that use cartons. This can be a bit challenging at first, but it is something you can slowly incorporate into your life with repetition.
Choosing products with renewable packaging is a simple step with far-reaching impact. The Tetra Pak carton packaging helps protect our planet’s limited supply of natural resources. Tetra Pak cartons are mainly made from paper, a renewable resource that can be naturally replenished.
6. Swap paper towels for cloth towels
Paper towels are an easy grab, but to live more sustainably & save some extra money each month cloth towels are a great alternative for everyday messes.
Recycling is so easy! I keep a large tote bag my husband got from a dental meeting & anytime I have extra plastic or glass I add it to the bag. Once the bag is filled I take it to a local grocery store that has recycling bins & recycle the products.
8. Repurpose & upcycle
This is one of my favorite things to do with leftover products. A few of the things I have repurposed & upcycled are toilet paper rolls, antique keys, mason jars & their lids/rings, glass insulators, & many old books. You can find more repurpose & upcycle projects by clicking here.
9. Donate & sell
It’s amazing how many things you can donate & sell. Instead of throwing away an old t-shirt, picture frame, or even a jar full of buttons you can lessen the landfill by donating & make some extra money by selling items you would normally throw away. You can pretty much sell anything these days, I have even seen empty toilet paper rolls for sale online!
10. Stay informed & up to date
A great way to live sustainably is to stay informed & up to date with the latest news (such as what products are now selling in cartons rather than cans) & information on how to live sustainably.
I’d love to hear your favorite tips for living a sustainable life!
