A simple tutorial for creating beautiful white salt dough for christmas ornaments & gift tags!
Ever since I was a kid I have played & created with salt dough. It’s inexpensive, easy to make, & pretty versatile.
As a kid I created shapes, animals, & people from salt dough & delighted in painting them. For our wedding we created little gift tags for our favors stamped with “Thank You.” Last year I created gift tag ornaments for Christmas presents with salt dough & this year I will again be using salt dough to create Christmas ornaments for our Christmas tree.
When I shared my gift tag ornaments tutorial last year I realized that I could create a whole post on whitening salt dough, but the holiday season was keeping me busy & I never got around to it. But this year I am starting extra early because I don’t want the holidays to get away from me!
So today I will be showing you how easy & quick it is to create white salt dough!
One of the reasons I created white salt dough in the first place was because I love to creatively test ideas for my blog & I really wanted to come up with something ascetically similar to cornstarch ornaments.
The problem with salt dough is that it naturally has a rustic appearance. Now don’t get me wrong I love my fair share of shabby chic & rustic things, but sometimes I want to start with a clean blank slate.
The solution came from a fall project I made a few years back when I created this Mini Pumpkin Patch.
And the answer? Paint!!

2 Cups Flour + Extra for stickiness
1 Cup Salt
1 Cup Lukewarm Water
White Paint – Arylic or whatever you have on hand
In a large bowl mix 2 cups of flour & 1 cup of salt. Then slowly mix in the lukewarm water until a dough like consistency forms.
Too wet? Add more flour! Too dry? Add more water!
Knead for 15-30 seconds to create a nice ball of dough.
Then slowly add white paint, kneading it in with flour (as needed), until it is the color you like.
That’s it! All that’s left is to create!
Note: This makes a lot of salt dough. So if you don’t want to make this much it’s easy to decrees the amounts.
2 parts flour, 1 part salt, & 1 part water.
Note on Storing
If you are unable to use up all of your salt dough in one sitting you can keep it in a sealed container for 3-5 days. Just add a little water or flour as needed.
Note on Drying
Normally I let my salt dough dry at room temperature over night. But if you are in a hurry you can quicken the process by placing your salt dough on a parchment paper covered baking sheet in the oven at 200ºF for 2-3 hours or until they are hardened. The thicker they are the more time they will need to dry. Just keep an eye on them if you put them in the oven.
