10 road trip time killers to pass the time & help make your road trip more fun & feel faster.
Travel is a huge part of my blog & our lives.
Even between our two jobs, we were blessed to be able to travel to 2 countries, fly to the southernmost part of Florida, & drive over 10,000 miles last year.
As you can see we road trip a lot.
Not only did we drive to a bunch of new & familiar places around the U.S. but we also took a road trip around Ireland last year.
And with all of the traveling we have done over the last several years, we have learned a few tricks for passing time on a road trip.
So I thought I’d share our top 10 ways to enjoy a road trip & make time feel like it’s moving faster all because you are having fun!
1. Audiobooks & Reading
Roger loves listening to me read, but my voice can only hold out so long on an 8-13+ hour trip.
So we switch between me reading while he drives & listening to an audiobook while I drive.
2. Create Something
3. A Themed Music Playlist
Create a playlist before you leave filled with music that matches your trip or destination.
We created a dramatic list of music for when we drove on the backside of the Road to Hana.
4. Good Snacks & Drinks
Having good snacks & drinks on a road trip is essential.
If you have a long way to go & don’t plan on stopping for long stretches of time, not having a drink or food can lead to people get hangry which makes a trip feel like it is never going to end.
But with good food & drinks, the good times keep coming!
5. Watch Destination Movies
We love watching shows & movies that feature our destination.
Plus it’s a fun way to get excited about where you are about to be & what you will see.
6. Write a Travel Journal
Keeping a journal of your travels is a great way to remember a moment & experience.
This tip is especially good for a road trip around the country or for on the way back home.
I also have a collection of 10 Beautiful Travel Journals you may like too!
7. Learn More About Your Destination
If you have good cell phone service & plenty of data reading fun facts & information about your destination is a fun way to get psyched for your destination.
While I always recommend that you plan your trip ahead of time (so that you don’t miss something or have extra time & not know what to do with it) reading more about your destination from bloggers online while on a road trip is an easy way to pass the time & learn new things.
8. Road Games
There are thousands of road trip games out there.
You can play 20 questions, the ABC game, or the license plate game without the need for anything but maybe a piece of paper or your phone to keep track.
There are also lots of games you can order online that are perfect for road trips!
9. Catch Up On Your Emails & Phone Calls
You’ll need good service for this one, but I love using spare time in the car to catch up on emails.
And if you prefer to write letters you can also use this time to catch up on your written correspondence.
10. Plan Your Next Trip
This is something Roger & I love to do near the end of every trip.
Usually, we already have an idea of where we are going, we may have even already booked the flights & hotels, but we love to use this time to discuss all the things we want to do, see, & eat on our next trip.
