3 Reasons You Should See Your Groom Before Your Wedding
Photos by Brian Lowman
Surprisingly there is a lot of “debate” over when the First Look should be on your wedding day. Traditionally the groom wouldn’t see the bride until she was walking towards him during the wedding march. Some people even think it’s bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding – which is a bit crazy because luck plays no part in marriage. Although I am all for tradition, my father-in-law even gave me a 6 pence for my birthday before we got married, I believe that a couple should discuss their options and decide together what’s best for them.
Before Roger and I were married I heavily debated – with myself – whether or not I wanted Roger to see me before the wedding. I know that might sound silly to some people, but for me it was an important detail of the wedding and for someone who loves tradition I know it can be a tough call.
We – aka I – finally decided that we would have the First Look before the ceremony and I thought I would share with you why we decided to break from tradition – and I hope this article will help you if you are on the fence about this topic!
1. Before the Wedding Pictures
One major concern that I had (and you might be having too) – especially since the ceremony and the reception was in my parent’s backyard – was having enough time to take pictures. This was the main reason we had the First Look before the ceremony, so that we could take all of our pictures together, and with our wedding party, before the ceremony and reception. Convincing my husband to let our photographer take pictures of him seeing me for the first time was a bit difficult, but I eventually won him over.
Side note: If you feel you didn’t, or won’t, have enough time to take pictures plan to take more pictures after you come back from your honeymoon or for your 1 year anniversary.
2. Special Time
I don’t know about you, but the idea of spending most of my wedding day without my groom sounded horrendous. I mean seriously this was an exciting day – even my morning trip to Walmart – and I didn’t want to spend all day without my husband-to-be. Seeing each other before the wedding meant that after all of the pictures were taken and before the ceremony began, we were able to relax. I took off my beautiful dress and slipped into my get-ready-attire enjoyed some time with Roger and our wedding party. Sometimes the little moments – and the unplanned moments – are when you can make the most memories on your wedding day.
3. My Grooms Reaction
Now I must admit that I was a little worried/concerned about what his reaction would be when he saw me walking down the aisle if he had already seen me – but the truth is it couldn’t have been any better! He looked as if he was seeing me for the first time, because in that moment as I was walking towards him our marriage, our eternal love for each other, became a reality.
The best part was that I got to see and enjoy two different but incredibly wonderful reactions from him that I will remember for the rest of my life. The first was excitement and joy when we did the First Look and because we did this before the ceremony, we had the chance to fully look each other over – note the above pictures. I know that sounds funny but it was so fun – my fake eyelashes especially fascinated him! However, my favorite moment was while I was walking down the aisle towards the love of my life. Our eyes met and we knew that we had found our soul mate for this life and the next.
