DIY Antique Glass Insulator Coat Rack Shelf for under $10.00!
I am super excited to share with all of you my Antique Glass Insulator Coat Rack Shelf! I have been dreaming of making this coat rack for almost two months now & I finally got around to making it this week.
A few months ago my husband & I traveled with his parents up to Ohio to visit his grandparents on their farm. This is a special trip that we take every year & I shared a few pictures from our mini vacay in a Life Lately shortly afterwards.
The reason our yearly trip to Ohio is so special is because it is filled with memories for my husband & traditions that he has had his whole life & that I have grown rather fond of over our 3+ years of marriage.
A couple of the many traditions we have includes sitting under their old trees talking & reminiscing while watching the gentle breeze sweep over the bean fields. And another (in an endless list of cherished family traditions) entails flea markets, antique stores, & yard/barn sales.
While my husband isn’t as big of the fan of this latter tradition, his parents & I could spend days in this activity.
One particular afternoon, after stopping for some soft serve ice cream on our way into town, my father-in-law & I spotted a little sign on the side of the road at the exact same time that read “barn sale.” He quickly swung on to the little dirt road & the two of us immediately jumped out of the van, leaving the rest of the family behind.
We couldn’t wait to see what treasures we would find.
After walking through more than half of the smelly old barn, we came across a beautiful dusty shelf of antique glass insulators. We looked at each other & he immediately asked the lady how much she wanted them for. Without any haggling we walked out of their with 9 gorgeous antique insulators for only $11!
I was in complete shock. Just the day before I had walked through an antique mall where there was the biggest most gorgeous display of antique insulators I had ever seen with prices ranging between $5-$25 a piece.
As soon as my husband saw me walk out of the barn with a box full of insulators he asked me what I was going to do with all of them & to be honest I wasn’t really sure.
A few hours later, as we were walking through a local goodwill (that we always stop by while in Ohio) looking for antique deals, I came across a little coat rack shelf for $2.99. And an idea was hatched.
I quickly bought the old wooden coat rack & took it out to the car to see if my idea would work. And it did!
To create my Antique Glass Insulator Coat Rack Shelf I sanded down the rack, wiped it clean, & painted on two coats of white paint.
While the paint was drying I cleaned up my antique glass insulators.
I then scuffed up the wood rack shelf with my sand paper & a damp cloth.
I applied E6000 glue to the bottom of each insulator, fitted it over the hook, & pressed down firmly.
Then let it dry overnight before hanging it.
Super simple! I’m not sure why I didn’t do it sooner! But at least now it is ready for all of the jackets needed in the cool crisp air of fall!
This Antique Glass Insulator Coat Rack Shelf is a wonderful way to re-purpose old glass insulators & give an old coat rack a facelift!

But He said to me,
“My grace is sufficient for you,
for My power is made perfect in weakness.”
Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weakness,
so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
