Verses for Courage
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong & courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” … ” Joshua 1:9
“Then I said to you, “Do not be terrified; do not be afraid of them. The Lord your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, & in the wilderness. There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.””Deuteronomy 1:29-31
“My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, & do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.” Proverbs 3:11-12
Verses with New Meanings
“Therefore a man shall leave his father & mother & be joined to his wife, & they shall become one flesh.” Genesis 2:24 NKJV Matthew 19:5 Mark 10:7 Ephesians 5:31 This has two meanings for me. The first is that while a mother’s relationship with their child is unique & special, it comes after the relationship designed by God between a husband & wife. And second, based off of this first understanding, is of the importance of raising a child to understand the importance of relationships, theirs with their parents & with their future spouse.

“Now fear the Lord & serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River & in Egypt, & serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me & my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:14-15
I thought these verses were a good segway into the next section. As the head of the family, a father’s example of what he puts first in life (as well as how he how he spends his time & money – earthly worship) effects the whole family.
A Father’s Example & God’s Example
“These are the commands, decrees & laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, so that you, your children & their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees & commands that I give you, & so that you may enjoy long life.” … “Love the Lord your God with all your heart & with all your soul & with all your strength. These commandments & I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home & when you walk along the road, when you lie down & when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands & bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses & on your gates.” Deuteronomy 6:1-2 & 5-9

“Finally, be strong in the Lord & in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh & blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world & against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, & after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, & with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation & the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers & requests. With this in mind, be alert & always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” Ephesians 6:10-18

“Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us & we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits & live!” Hebrews 12:9
