Bible verses about mothers and motherhood for mothers, fathers, & their children.
I have decided to start a new series within my Confessions of Faith posts and I am really excited about it! The last Wednesday of every month I will create a collection of verses from the Bible on different subjects. And while I already have one on Bible Verses for Guidance this post on Bible Verses about Mothers will be the first post in this new series.
And since Mother’s Day is just around the corner I have decided that this is the perfect place to start. Although I am not a mother yet I have been blessed with a mother & a mother-in-law who both have beautiful hearts that inspire me to be a loving mother to our future children.
As I began researching verses, searching keywords, & looking for specific verses on motherhood I found 3 things.
1. Verses on motherhood that are well known.
2. Verses that are repeated in the old & new testament which emphasizes their importance.
3. Verses & stories with meanings I hadn’t considered prior to this Bible research.
And since I wasn’t sure how I wanted to organize the list of verses I decided to organize them by those 3 categories along with a little bit of commentary sprinkled here & there.

Verses with New Meanings
Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24 NKJV Matthew 19:5 Mark 10:7 Ephesians 5:31 – This has two meanings for me. The first is that while a mother’s relationship with their child is unique & special, it comes after the relationship designed by God between a husband & wife. And second, based off of this first understanding, is of the importance of raising a child to understand the importance of relationships, theirs with their parents & with their future spouse.
Ruth – This book has new meaning to me because I have always read & contemplated the story from Ruth’s perspective, maybe this is because I am not a mother yet &/or do not have any son/daughter-in-laws. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to reconsider the story from a mother’s perspective. There is so much love, hope, & selflessness in this story!
2 Kings 4:8-37 – Elisha Raises the Shunammite’s Son – Her faith & willingness to give of herself & home is beautiful.
So, when he had considered this, he came to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose surname was Mark, where many were gathered together praying. Acts 12:12 NKJV – I love that her home was a gathering place for prayer!
