A Bucket List for Marriage ~ Photo by Chas Petersen
Bucket Lists. It’s not a new concept or idea, but a simple list of goals and dreams – even my high school English teacher gave us an assignment to write our 100 life goals. However, I have noticed a trend when it comes to creating a Bucket List – they usually revolve around one person – you! Now I am not saying there is anything wrong with having a bucket list for yourself. I am however worried about the effects of a bucket list.
Not too long ago there was an ad on TV propagating the importance of fulfilling your personal bucket list – goals and dreams – instead of or before getting married. I found this advertisement to be a bit discouraging for two reasons. First, being that there is a common belief that life seems to end when you get married. That you can no longer have dreams and reach goals once you are married and that you can’t fulfill your bucket list with your spouse. The second is that it propagates selfishness – focusing on ones own goals with disregard to those who are “important” in your life. Although if you aren’t ready to put others first and self second you might not be ready for marriage anyways.

This is why my husband and I have a shared Bucket List. We started writing our bucket list early last year during a car trip. Our list comprises both serious and fun goals – and the best part is that I won’t be fulfilling them by myself! Some of our goals are more on the fun side like a Disney Cruise with our future kids, being extras in a Star Trek movie, and sitting in the rain on the beach, while others will take a lifetime of work, love, and dedication to fulfill our dream of having a successful marriage.
If you are single, I encourage you not to be afraid of getting married before you finish your list of goals, and if you are married, I challenge you to spend some special time with your spouse and make a bucket list for your marriage! In reality, why would you ever want to do anything by yourself? The truth is every experience becomes much more worthwhile and valuable when enjoyed with your best friend and lover!
