These Caprese Bites are absolutely delicious and are perfect as a snack or appetizer for any party – who doesn’t love melted mozzarella? One of my favorite things about these Caprese Bites is that they can be fried or baked!
What you’ll need:
6 Wanton wrappers
6 small slices of fresh Mozzarella Cheese – mozzarella balls work too
3-6 Fresh Basil Leaves, sliced – depending on how much you like basil
Pesto – optional
A little bowl of water
1/4 of a cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil for frying or 1 teaspoon of Extra Virgin Olive Oil for baking
Your favorite Tomato Dipping Sauce or Balsamic Vinegar
*Although this is a pretty simple recipe please be careful when using hot oil because there is always a possibility of splattering – and getting burned is not fun. Be sure to take precautions – I like to wear a long sleeve shirt or a hoodie when deep frying these just in case.
First lay out the 6 wanton wrappers and place a slice of fresh mozzarella cheese and a few slices of basil leaves on top – you could also add a little bit of pesto on top as well.
Brush the outside of the wanton wrappers with the water.
Seal the wanton wrappers by folding one corner across to the other corner, pressing firmly – looks like a triangle – then fold the two outer edges on top.
Fry in a pan of hot olive oil until golden brown on all sides – about 1-2 minutes.
Place the golden Caprese Bites on a paper towel to cool and remove any excess oil.
Serve with your favorite tomato dipping sauce!
You can seal the wanton wrappers as described under “to fry” or you can bring all of the corners of the wanton wrapper up to the top and pinch all of the edges to seal it tight.
Place the sealed wanton wrappers on an oil sprayed baking sheet – I have also used a small baking stone in the past to cook them on – and brush each wanton wrapper with a little bit of extra virgin olive oil.
In an oven preheated to 425 bake the Caprese Bites until golden brown – about 2-3 minutes.
Serve with your favorite tomato dipping sauce or if you want to go real caprese then use some room temperature balsamic vinegar!
