A Happy New Year’s Matches Sign that can double as New Year’s party decor & is a bright way to bring in the new year!
Merry Christmas Eve Eve!!
Even though we are just 2 days away from Christmas I thought I would share a little New Year’s DIY tutorial that was inspired by last year’s 2015 Matches Sign.
And since it isn’t past Christmas yet I thought you wouldn’t mind the Christmasy tablecloth behind the Happy New Year’s Matches Sign!
It’s such a festive time of year!!
The reason I decided to create this Happy New Year’s Matches Sign is because I wanted a sign that I could share year after year that didn’t have a specific date on it like last year’s sign.
I also decided to use a different base to my sign this year because some people worried the wood base I used last year would be too flammable. Although truth be told that wasn’t an issue for us because after the flames got big they just flickered down & died without catching the wood on fire, you can see the video here.
And since I didn’t have any wood I decided to be resourceful & use an old burnt-looking baking sheet as the base for my Happy New Year’s Matches Sign! So instead of throwing away my rough looking baking sheet I decided to upcycle it! Don’t you think this is an exciting way to repurpose an old baking sheet in a big way for the new year?!
Even though the wood base was not a fire issue for us that does not mean you shouldn’t be cautious when lighting your Happy New Year’s Matches Sign (no matter what the base).
We lit our sign away from any structures, on top of a brick path, with all the necessary precautions.
And while I am on the subject, it is also very important to note that you need to take precautions whenever you light your sign (or anything else) on fire. Just as you would take precautions when lighting a bonfire or candle you should also take precautions when lighting this Happy New Year’s Matches Sign. Fire extinguishers are always important to have on hand near a fire. And please be sure to douse your fire with water at the end, even if there is just a few embers. Safety first!
Now that I have finished this mini safety note let’s get back to discussing how fun & pretty this Happy New Year’s Matches Sign is for your New Year’s party!
I love that this New Year’s Eve sign can double as decor as well as a fun way to bring in the new year!
And don’t worry, this year I won’t make you wait until New Year’s Eve to show you what it looks like on fire. I will be lighting my Happy New Year’s Matches Sign sometime this week (or next) & then sharing it with you the week of New Year’s Eve.

Materials:
Old Baking Sheet
Expo Marker
Hot Glue Gun & Glue
Matches
Mod Podge
Small Paint Brush
Glitter
My way overused baking sheet that I couldn’t let go of, until now!
I then freehanded the words “Happy New Year” with an expo marker (so I could adjust any mistakes I made) & simply hot glued the bottom of the matches (a few at a time) to the sheet.
Keep hot gluing the matches to the sign until all of the drawn words are covered to create your Happy New Year’s Matches Sign.
Although there are more characters for “Happy New Year’s” than “2015” I surprisingly used about the same number of matches to create both signs. And the reason for this is that you can make the characters as thick or thin as you want. Which means this project can take an hour to several hours to create.
Then add a layer of Mod Podge & fine silver glitter to the baking sheet.
That’s it! So simple, but with lots of PIZZAZZ & GLITTER!
I’d love to see your Happy New Year’s Matches Sign!
