5 tips to help you quickly declutter before moving to help your transition be smoother without any excess junk.
We are about 1 month away from moving into our new home!
A few weeks ago I shared a new post about How to Prepare for a Move in 1 Month & as I was thinking about it I thought I should break down the points a little bit more for those who are looking for more detailed tips on how to declutter quickly for a move.
We did a major declutter when we moved out of the house we sold before moving into an apartment.
And while we will only have been in this apartment for about 4 months I plan to do a mini declutter before we move into the house we are building.
Although I’m not sure if I can count it as little since we will be donating some big things, like our washer, dryer, a couch, & a bunch of miscellaneous things.
If you can’t guess minimalism is calling me from our new home & I’m doing my best to prepare before we move in.
Plus decluttering will make settling into your new house so much easier & quicker!
So let’s get to these 5 tips so you can start to declutter your home for your big move!
1. Make a Plan
Getting organized is always my first step.
I personally like to go room by room, decluttering each room from top to bottom as I go.
Having a game plan & getting organized will help elevate stress as you prepare to move.
2. Think About Your Next Home
While deciding what you want to keep, donate, trash, or sell keep your next house in mind.
Some things you will want to consider is what furniture will work & what decor needs to be replaced.
Maybe you’ll measure your couch & realize it’s too big or small for your next home. Or maybe the decor is not the same style as your next house.
Either way, think about your next house & plan accordingly while decluttering.
3. Pull Everything Out
An easy way to declutter a room is to pull everything out, out of closets, out of cabinets, & out of drawers.
Once everything is out, decide what you want to keep, donate, sell, & trash while organizing everything accordingly.
4. Make Quick Decisions
The longer you hold an item in your hands the more you’ll want to keep it which can easily lead to keeping everything & put a stop to decluttering.
Give yourself a time limit for finishing each room so that you don’t end up spending hours decluttering only one room.
5. Donate, Trash, & Sell
I highly encourage donation, but not everything is donation-worthy, sometimes things are so far gone that the only option is to trash it.
Also, some items you can’t donate. For example, our local donation center won’t take mattresses & they didn’t want our storage bed.
So selling those items or giving them away for free is a great alternative to the dump!
I hope these decluttering tips help you as you prepare to move!
