5 simple tips to decorating a modern bathroom like a minimalist pro.
I am so excited about sharing this summer refresh of our master bathroom with you!
A few months ago I shared the before & after pictures of our renovated bathroom & ever since then our bathroom has sat empty & in great need of decor. So last week Roger & I went on a special date that started with Target & ended with homemade pasta. We kept joking that it was the perfect date night for me because it involved shopping at one of my favorite stores & eating some of my favorite food.
Although the best part about the date was that it kept going. The next day I was able to decorate our bathroom with all of the treasures we picked up from Target!
But before I share my tips on how to decorate a modern bathroom like a minimalist pro, I thought I would share a little bit with you on how we designed our minimalist modern bathroom.
When we renovated our master bathroom last fall we chose to not include a bathtub. We knew it would minimize the space available for a large walk-in rain shower & it would make our moderately sized bathroom appear much smaller. While a bathtub is great, it isn’t something that is used on a daily basis, at least we don’t. So we decided that since there was a whole mini room upstairs (off of the main bathroom) dedicated to just a tub overlooking the valley below we really didn’t need to over clutter our master bath with a bathtub.
This is one of those decisions I definitely don’t regret because it has helped us create a modern minimalist bathroom theme that we love & fully use.
While the layout of our bathroom is now permanent with the renovations being completed, the minimal bathroom decor is not. For the last week, I have been moving them about to find just the right balance. I believe my favorite combination is the art & reed diffuser above the toilet, with the Quilted Northern Ultra Soft & Strong® Mega Rolls in a stand next to it, the stool next to the shower with fresh flowers & a candle, with the vanity topped with a terrarium, geode, & candle.
I love how there is a hint of calming purple in each section of our bathroom without being overwhelming & how each item has a purpose or meaning without creating clutter or chaos.
Which leads me to these 5 simple tips to help you easily decorate a modern bathroom like a minimalist pro.
1. The Basics
The first step to creating a clean modern minimal bathroom is to remove everything from your bathroom & only place the essential items back into your bathroom.
An easy way to do this is to take everything out of drawers & cabinets & place it on your bed. Then set a timer for 5-10 minutes & place everything into three piles; keep, donate, & trash. The longer you consider if you should keep it, the less you will be willing to part with the item. So work quickly. Chances are you don’t need 7 shades of pink nail polish, but maybe your nieces would like them!
Once you know what you want to keep, carefully arrange them into all of your drawers & cabinets, leaving as little as possible on your bathroom vanity. For cleanliness reasons we even like to keep our toothbrushes in our vanity cabinets because the toilet is not in a separate room.
Every item should have a purpose & a place.
2. Color Pattern
Choosing clean & neutral colors are key.
We chose grey & white, with elements of natural wood & hints of purple. We love the simpleness of this color combination & how it creates the appearance & feel of a spa bathroom.
Picking decor items that are practical & useful are an easy way to ensure you keep your modern bathroom looking minimal, composed, & clean.
While many bathrooms have shelving over their toilet to decorate we chose to hang a pretty piece of art from Target above the toilet & a small stool that had both decorative & practical purposes. The art adds balance to this part of our bathroom, both in space & by adding another hint of purple to the room. I might sound like an old woman saying this, but I like having a stool to place my foot on while applying lotion.
As we didn’t want to drill any holes into the wall tile we chose a toilet paper stand to hold the Quilted Northern Ultra Soft & Strong® Mega Rolls we picked up from Target. And if you haven’t picked up a package of Quilted Northern® Mega Rolls recently you will want to make a special trip to your local Target because each roll contains 4 regular rolls in one, which means they will last longer. That’s one less thing to worry about!
You can even see how full those Quilted Northern® Mega Rolls look on our new toilet paper stand!
While not every piece of art &/or decor is practical it is important to add pieces that have a meaning or purpose. Whether it’s a piece with a special memory or simply creating balance by grouping items in threes.
And just as the art added balance to one side of our bathroom, we wanted to add decorative & purposeful art between the sinks of our vanity. The geode, which has a few purplish/grey veins, was one of our favorite pieces that we found at Target. The geodes were labeled as bookends, but we decided it would add just the right element to our master bathroom. Our home is on the side of a mountain & completely surrounded & built upon huge boulders & rocks. Therefore, it seemed fitting to include a geode in our master bathroom.
Also, every modern spa bathroom needs to have relaxing scents, so between the reed defuser & the two candles, our bathroom always has a beautiful fragrance.
5. Fresh Decor
Adding something fresh brings life to a bathroom.
Including fresh elements is one of my favorite ways to decorate any room & our master bathroom has two! The first is a succulent terrarium on our vanity, the second is a fresh bouquet of flowers on the stool. The simplest & least expensive way to add fresh bouquets to your bathroom is to decorate with the season. My mom has several bushes of hydrangeas that are perfect during the summer. The fall provides beautiful branches of leaves. At Christmas time there is always plenty of extra trimmings Christmas tree trimmings. White or purple orchids are also one of our favorite fresh elements to keep our master bath decor simple, beautiful & minimal.
