Last month I mentioned to my husband that I thought it was time to change out all of the batteries in our smoke detectors over the weekend.
Over the last 3 years in this house, the batteries have almost always died at night, and we have made some funny memories changing them in the dark.
We had put new batteries in all of them around the beginning of the year, so he thought we should have about a month before needing to replace them all again.
Of course, the weekend came and went and the batteries weren’t changed.
I considered doing it myself, but we have really tall ceilings so even with a ladder it’s a difficult feat for me as I’m only 5 foot 2 inches.
Halfway through the next week the inevitable happened.
Around 4 or 5 am we heard loud talking and then a beep.
I heard an unhappy noise from my husband, and I said something about maybe it won’t keep beeping (wishful dreaming as this has happened too many times before).
But about a minute later it beeped again.
So Roger headed outside to get the ladder and I made my way to the laundry room to get new batteries while continually praying that the beeping wouldn’t wake up our son.
Roger Dale is a light sleeper and he was sleeping just on the other side of the wall.
Praise God he slept through the whole thing, even when it was crazy loud after we put in the new batteries!
And I’m sure you can guess that the rest of the smoke detectors now all have new batteries.
So here are a few smoke detector tips to help you (and me) save sleep:
- Change out all your batteries at the same time.
- Use high-quality batteries.
- Set a reminder on your phone, with Alexa, in your planner, or on your kitchen calendar for when you need to change them again.
***Alternatively, you could swap out your standard smoke detectors for these smoke detectors that last 10 years with no battery change!! (ps. at the time of writing this they are 45% off!!)***
I have a feeling that once my husband sees the price he is going to want to change all of ours out so that we never have to experience a sleepless night because of a low battery again!

I hope this post helps you save your sleep!
